Public Affairs

Vital to the success of the Coast Guard Auxiliary's national boating safety efforts is an informed and knowledgeable boating public. The Coast Guard and the Auxiliary believe that education is the best approach to preventing accidents. Members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary present public education classes as a service to the boating public.

Division 2 is offering a number of boating classes that are open to the public and available in your area. You can find general information about the courses we offer by clicking the links below. Each link will open in a new window. Note that either the ABC or BS&S would prepare you to obtain a NJ State Boating Safety Certificate, now required by state law.

  Brief Description
America's Boating Course

(ABC)

This is our newest offering that covers the fundamentals of boating.  The course is designed for skippers and crew of all types of watercraft.  It is a condensed version of Boating Skills and Seamanship.

Boating Skills and Seamanship

(BS&S)

This course, designed with power boaters in mind, covers either six or thirteen lessons. The first six lessons are called the core subjects and are the minimum required to receive a certificate. The additional seven lessons cover more subjects.

GPS for Mariners

(GPSFM)

Are you utilizing your GPS fully for navigating using waypoints and routes in concert with nautical charts?  If not, come to our all new workshop and bring your handheld GPS.  The course includes instruction and class exercises that you do with your GPS to reinforce learning.

Basic / Advanced Coastal Navigation

(BCN / ACN)

These courses are comprehensive courses to prepare the boater with the knowledge needed to safely pilot a boat.  Both courses include: terminology and definitions; in-depth discussion of the magnetic compass; the nautical chart; navigator’s tools and instruments; dead reckoning; and piloting.  ACN adds lessons on the impact of current; tides and tidal currents; radio navigation; and voyage planning.
