Vital to the success of the Coast
Guard Auxiliary's national boating safety efforts is an informed and
knowledgeable boating public. The Coast Guard and the Auxiliary
believe that education is the best approach to preventing accidents.
Members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary present public education
classes as a service to the boating public. Division 2 is offering
a number of boating classes that are open to the public and
available in your area. You can find general information about the

a new window. Note that either the ABC or BS&S would prepare you to
obtain a NJ State Boating Safety Certificate, now required by state
law.

America's
Boating Course (ABC) |
 |
This is our
newest offering that covers the fundamentals of boating.
The course is designed for skippers and crew of all types of
watercraft. It is a condensed version of Boating Skills
and Seamanship. |

Boating
Skills and Seamanship (BS&S) |
 |
This course,
designed with power boaters in mind, covers either six or
thirteen lessons. The first six lessons are called the core
subjects and are the minimum required to receive a
certificate. The additional seven lessons cover more
subjects. |

GPS for
Mariners (GPSFM) |
 |
Are you utilizing your GPS fully for navigating using
waypoints and routes in concert with nautical charts? If
not, come to our all new workshop and bring your handheld
GPS. The course includes instruction and class exercises
that you do with your GPS to reinforce learning. |

Basic /
Advanced Coastal Navigation (BCN / ACN) |

These courses
are comprehensive courses to prepare the boater with the
knowledge needed to safely pilot a boat.
Both courses include: terminology and definitions; in-depth
discussion of the magnetic compass; the nautical chart;
navigator’s tools and instruments; dead reckoning; and
piloting. ACN adds lessons on the impact of current; tides
and tidal currents; radio navigation; and voyage planning. |
